Description
This Colt Model 1877 “Thunderer” is an authentic late-19th-century Colt double-action revolver chambered in .38 Colt, manufactured in the antique era and legally classified as a pre-1899 antique. Introduced in 1877 as Colt’s first double-action revolver, the Thunderer holds an important place in Colt history and is popular among collectors of Western-era firearms.
This example (serial 140940) shows uniform patina across the barrel, frame, and cylinder—consistent with age—and retains its original hard rubber bird’s-head grips featuring the classic Colt logo. The barrel appears to measure approximately 4½ inches, and all major components, including the loading gate, ejector rod, hammer, and trigger, are intact. Mechanical condition is untested but the revolver appears complete, making it a strong candidate for display or restoration.
The Colt Thunderer is one of the most recognizable Old West revolvers and was famously associated with historical figures and frontier carry. For collectors looking for an authentic, unrestored example with the right look and honest wear, this revolver is an excellent find.
